Are electric wheelchairs waterproof? Can you use them in the rain?
If you’re looking to use an electric wheelchair out and about, one question that may go through your mind is: are electric wheelchairs waterproof and can I use them in the rain?
It’s a completely understandable concern, because you don’t want to spend your money on a powerchair only a) damage it, or b) find it’s not suitable for your requirements. So, let’s explain how electric wheelchairs and water interact with each other!
Are electric wheelchairs waterproof?
Electric wheelchairs have a level of water resistance but they are not completely waterproof.
An electric wheelchair typically has an IP rating of IPX4, which means it’s protected against splashes of water from any angle, but not is not protected against submersion in water.
This IP rating generally refers to the level to which the electrical system has been protected. Other parts including shrouds, for example, will be more water resistant and may even be fully waterproof.
The most vulnerable parts of an electric wheelchair in terms of water ingress are the controller and joystick.

So, can you use electric wheelchairs in the rain?
As a general rule, it’s best not to use electric wheelchairs in anything more than very light rain. If this sounds like a scenario you might regularly experience, we’d recommend looking for an electric wheelchair with a sealed battery box. You can buy waterproof capes and covers to reduce the risk of water ingress too.
What should I do if my electric wheelchair gets wet?
Even with the best planning, it’s entirely possible to get caught in a downpour! If this happens, or your electric wheelchair otherwise gets particularly wet, the best thing you can do is get it dried off as quickly as possible. This will reduce the likelihood of corrosion or rusting. If you have any concerns, you can always get in touch with our technical department for advice or an inspection.
