Are there different types of electric wheelchairs available?
Yes, there are different types of electric wheelchairs available, each with unique features or benefits to suit various needs.
Mid-wheel drive powerchairs offer superior manoeuvrability with a smaller turning circle, making them a great option for use indoors. Rear wheel drive powerchairs offer better performance outdoors and greater directional stability.
Folding power chairs are ideal for indoors and travel, while prescriptive or bespoke powerchairs include customisable comfort seating and powered positioning options, amongst other benefits.
How much do electric wheelchairs cost?
How much a powerchair costs largely depends on how complex the user’s needs are.
To give you an overview, standard powerchairs start at around £2,000, and will often be compact, travel-friendly chairs with limited customisation available. As an example, the Robooter E40 is a compact, foldable indoor electric wheelchair that costs £2695.
More specialist powerchairs for users with complex needs start at around £4,000 and can cost upwards of £10,000, depending on the level of customisation required.
Specialist standing powerchairs are the most expensive electric wheelchairs, often costing over £20,000.

Can you purchase an electric wheelchair ex-VAT?
If you’ve had a look at our range of powerchairs, you’ve probably noticed the prices are quoted ‘ex VAT’ – and you may be wondering whether you do or don’t have to pay the VAT!
The good news is, that Powerchairs designed solely for use by disabled people are eligible for VAT relief.
Under VAT Notice 701/7, you can buy an electric wheelchair VAT-free if:
- You are chronically sick or disabled
- You are buying a the chair for personal or domestic use
It’s important to note that there are separate rules for disabled people in a hospital or nursing home. VAT Notice 701/31 makes clear that goods cannot be provided, ordered or paid for by the institution. However, charities can buy a powerchair for a disabled person (for personal or domestic use) at 0% VAT.

Can you get an electric wheelchair on the NHS?
It is sometimes possible to get an electric wheelchair on the NHS, depending on your needs and the support available in your area.
It’s worth noting, however, that a wheelchair provided by the NHS will most likely have limited options and not be tailored to your requirements, potentially resulting in poor comfort.
Is it possible to get lightweight electric wheelchairs?
If you’re looking to buy a portable electric wheelchair, you’re probably researching to find the lightest possible solution, so it’s easy to lift in and out of your car boot or take on public transport like planes.
It’s possible to get lightweight, folding powerchairs weighing between 12-15kg, as well as powerchairs that are dismantled for easy transport.
