Do mobility scooters need insurance in the UK?

If you’re looking to buy a new mobility scooter, you may be wondering, do I need to get insurance?

It’s a good question, so let’s dive in and look at whether insurance is required or necessary in the UK.

Is insurance legally required for mobility scooters?

No, there is no legal requirement to have a class 2 or class 3 mobility scooter insured in the UK, as stated by the UK government.

If your scooter is not in a class, due to its total weight being greater than 254kg, the UK government states you must insure it. This is rare, however, as the vast majority of mobility scooters fall into the Class 2 and Class 3 categories.

Do we recommend getting insurance for your mobility scooter?

A mobility scooter represents a significant investment for most, so we recommend considering getting insurance for your mobility scooter.

Insurance provides peace of mind and will typically afford the following protections:

  • Accidental damage cover
  • Theft and vandalism cover
  • Third-party liability protection
  • Cover for other legal costs

Compared to the cost of insuring a car, mobility scooter insurance is relatively low-cost, so it’s worth considering if you’re seeking a little extra peace-of-mind!
