How much do mobility scooters cost in the UK?
How much do Mobility Scooters cost? This will always be one of the first questions anyone will ask when researching mobility scooters, and that’s fine. After all, price matters! It’s not the only consideration but it’s fairly important, and for many of us it has a big influence over what products we choose.
At Felgains, we believe in educating every prospective buyer, even if that ultimately leads you towards a different supplier of scooters. So, in this article, I’ll do my best to outline how much mobility scooters cost in the UK and explain to you what factors affect the price.
How much does a mobility scooter cost?
How much a mobility scooter costs largely depends on how complex your needs are, and which category of scooter you require.
Mobility scooters generally fit into 3 categories; Class 2, Class 3, and folding/travel scooters.
Travel and folding mobility scooters
The average travel-friendly mobility scooter costs between £1000-2000. Higher-end travel scooters can cost more, such as the Atto Sport, which costs £3195.
The cheapest travel-friendly scooter we sell here at Felgains is the ST1 Mobility Scooter, which is dismantleable for easy transportation and costs £895.
Class 2 mobility scooters
Class 2, pavement-use scooters typically cost between £1500 to £2500.
The Leo is an example of a class 2 mobility scooter, available here at Felgains.
Class 3 mobility scooters
Class 3 mobility scooters are the largest scooters available, and are suitable for road use. Prices start around £2,500 and can go up to over £5,000.
An example of a class 3 scooter would be the Orion Scooter.
Can mobility scooters be purchased without VAT?
Yes, mobility scooters that are designed solely for use by disabled people are eligible for VAT relief.
Under VAT Notice 701/7, you can buy a mobility scooter VAT-free if:
- You are chronically sick or disabled
- You are buying the chair for personal or domestic use
It’s important to note that there are separate rules for disabled people in a hospital or nursing home. VAT Notice 701/31 makes clear that goods cannot be provided, ordered or paid for by the institution. However, charities can buy a scooter for a disabled person (for personal or domestic use) at 0% VAT.
What else affects the cost of a mobility scooter?
Adding options and accessories to your scooter can add additional cost. For example, a storage cover can add around £30.
There may also be ongoing servicing and maintenance costs to consider, depending on how often you are planning to use the scooter and what service package you choose.
