So, you’ve heard of a new type of mobility aid called a self balancing wheelchair and you’re wondering: what are they, how do they work and are they any good? Here’s your introduction!

A self balancing wheelchair, also known as a seated segway wheelchair, is a new type of electric mobility vehicle that features innovative self-balancing technology, making it possible to drive on just two wheels by detecting the user’s body movements to set the direction of travel.

How do self balancing wheelchairs work?

Self balancing wheelchairs have a battery powered motors, in the same way as electric wheelchairs. But instead of having a speed dial and joystick controller, a seated segway wheelchair relies on detecting the user’s body movements to set the speed and direction of travel. For example, leaning forward triggers the motor to drive the wheelchair forwards. Lean further forwards to go faster! Some models also have a handlebar for left- and right-hand movements.

What are the advantages of self balancing wheelchairs?

These innovative self balancing wheelchairs open up new possibilities for a range of people with limited mobility. While individual models may be designed for different uses and have specific features and benefits, there are some exciting new advantages that self balancing wheelchairs offer overall:

1. Manoeuvrable

Seated segway wheelchairs are very compact in size and offer far superior manoeuvrability than many traditional electric wheelchairs, for example. With the ability to turn on the spot, it’s easy to weave your way through crowds, squeeze into a lift, or negotiate a tight passageway.

2. Powerful and capable across terrains

Self balancing wheelchairs are typically fitted with powerful motors for a speedy drive, and the large wheels handle a variety of terrains with ease – all while you stay nicely in balance!

3. Intuitive controls

Self balancing wheelchairs move in a naturally intuitive way compared to traditional electric wheelchairs, making them incredibly user-friendly.

4. Great for fitness and rehab

Self balancing wheelchairs require some physical input from the user, so they’re a great way to keep joints and muscles active, while protecting them against damage from overworking.
