Single motor vs dual motor riser recliner chairs: which is best for me?
Are you in the early stages of researching rise and recline chairs and want to understand the various mechanisms? Confused by all the terminology?
In this guide, I aim to explain, in detail, the differences between single motor and dual motor riser recliner chairs, to help you in your decision making process.
What is a single-motor riser recliner chair?
As the name suggests, a single-motor rise and recline chair has one motor. This motor powers both the footrest and the backrest so when you use the recline function, they move in one fixed action (more on that below).
There is a common misconception that having a single motor means an armchair only has a recline function. In fact, unless you choose a recline-only model, the motor also powers a rise function.
A single-motor riser recliner will typically have a handset with just two buttons. One button controls the rise function, and one controls the recline function. Some may also have an On/Off button, reset button or an optional key lock.
Advantages of a single-motor riser recliner chair
- Simplicity: Operating a single-motor recliner is straightforward and generally involves just two buttons on a handset: one to recline and one to lift. This simplicity is ideal for users who may struggle with complex controls.
- Affordability: Single-motor riser recliners are typically more budget-friendly than dual motor chairs, making them a great choice for those who want comfort and support without spending extra on more complex mechanisms.
- Space efficiency: Some single-motor recliners can be positioned closer to the wall, as the reclining motion is more compact. This is helpful for users with limited space.
Disadvantages of a single-motor riser recliner chair
- Limited position adjustability: Because the footrest and backrest operate in tandem, it’s impossible to raise just the footrest or adjust the backrest independently. For users who need specific positions, this limitation may reduce comfort.

What is a dual-motor riser recliner chair?
As you might imagine, a dual motor rise and recline chair has two motors. One motor powers the backrest, and one powers the legrest and rise function. This means the backrest and legrest operate independently of each other, so you can choose from a range of positions for optimum comfort.
When you’re ready to stand up, the chair will lift you up to a point where it feels comfortable to walk away, or transfer from. The rise function also works in the opposite direction to help you lower yourself into the chair the next time you sit down.
A dual-motor riser recliner chair will usually have a handset with four or six buttons. Some handsets may also have an On/Off button, reset button or an optional key lock.
Advantages of a dual-motor riser recliner chair
- Greater adjustability: The dual-motor system offers a higher degree of control, enabling you to position the backrest and footrest independently. This is ideal for users with specific needs, such as those who need to raise their legs for circulation while remaining upright. Below are the positions that can be achieved with a standard dual-motor chair:
- Better for extended use: If you plan to spend long periods in the chair, the flexibility of a dual motor recliner can provide better support and reduce discomfort, especially for those who need special seating positions to relieve pressure.
Disadvantages of a dual-motor riser recliner chair
- Higher cost: Dual motor chairs are often more expensive due to the additional motor and increased functionality. This can be a deciding factor for those on a budget.
- More complex controls: With more options comes a more complex handset. While this may not be an issue for everyone, users who prefer simplicity might find dual motor controls challenging to use.

Key considerations when choosing your chair
- Budget: If affordability is a priority, a single motor chair can provide essential functions at a lower price point. For those willing to invest a bit more, a dual motor chair offers additional flexibility.
- Specific health or comfort needs: If you have a medical condition that requires frequent position changes, a dual motor chair’s customisability can be a great asset. For example, users with arthritis or circulation issues may benefit from the ability to adjust the backrest and footrest independently.
- Ease of use: Single motor chairs offer easy, straightforward controls, which may suit those who prefer simplicity or are new to riser recliners. Dual motor chairs require slightly more input, which can be manageable but may feel overwhelming for some.
- Duration of use: If you plan to spend several hours in the chair each day, you may find the additional comfort of a dual-motor model worthwhile. However, if you need the chair for shorter durations, a single-motor model may meet your needs adequately.
