Glenwood SEN School | Overhead Hoisting Project
Project type: Overhead Hoisting
Client: Morgan Sindall/Essex County Council
Location: Essex
Background to the project
Glenwood SEN School is a newbuild school recently built by Morgan Sindall.
A £15.4 million project, funded by Essex County Council, the school is a specially designed education facility for young people aged 3-19 years with severe (and multiple) learning difficulties. The two-storey school has state-of-the-art facilities to support 210 children and young adults.
Our partnership & solution
Felgains was approached to partner with Morgan Sindall to supply and install overhead hoisting throughout the school.
In total, Felgains supplied and installed 43 Ceiling Hoist Systems, with most being H-track systems to facilitate full room coverage and room-to-room transfers. Some of the rooms that are fitted with overhead hoisting include classrooms, hygiene rooms, a swimming pool and a trampoline room.
All of the hoisting systems utilise the Robin Overhead Ceiling Hoist motor and tracking system, which was specially selected due to its unique design, which omits the need for a spreader bar.
The absence of a spreader bar is especially beneficial for users with learning disabilities, as it creates a sense of freedom and allows greater personal interaction between the user and the carer.
Project Outcome
Working closely to a tight schedule, Felgains successfully delivered the project on time ahead of the school premises officially opening in 2019.
The staff & students of Glenwood SEN School greatly appreciate the convenience of the purpose-made room-coverage hoist systems, enabling seamless transfers and minimal distress for students.
Since opening, the school has received accolades from the BBC and was a 2018 RICS East Community Benefit award winner.
