The Ultimate Guide to Mobility Scooters
Our aim is to give you (almost!) everything you need to know about mobility scooters – or disability scooters, as they’re also known.
What are mobility scooters?
Mobility scooters are single-seat, battery-powered vehicles with an electric motor. They have either 3 or 4 wheels and are operated using simple handlebar style controls. Designed to be used by people who have reduced mobility for walking, they are also known as disability scooters.
There are two classes – Class 2 and Class 3 – and several types of mobility scooters for different use cases. Some of the most popular types include folding mobility scooters, which are designed for transport in a car boot or on public transport like aeroplanes or trains. But there’s also road legal and all-terrain mobility scooters for the most adventurous, with advanced suspension, large capacity batteries and added safety features. Under UK law, there are rules and regulations which govern the use of the different types of mobility scooters. We’ll explain the differences between the different types, and the rules about how and where you can use them, in our Mobility Scooters FAQs and How To Guides.
Driving a mobility scooter requires no manual effort beyond steering the handlebars. That makes them ideal for people who have difficulties walking and don’t have the strength for a self-propelled manual wheelchair. Buying a mobility scooter to get out and about in can therefore give you back a real sense of freedom and independence! Some people are concerned about stigma attached to mobility scooters, but the truth is many people (probably millions!) in all walks and stages of life use electric scooters to lead a more fulfilling life.
Mobility Scooters Prices & Costs
Prices of mobility scooters start at around £400 ex VAT and go all the way up to around £8000 ex VAT. Remember you can claim VAT Relief on a mobility scooter purchase if you have a long-term medical condition or disability. You may also be able to trade in an unwanted mobility aid to reduce the cost of your new mobility scooter.
Mobility Scooter Comparisons, Reviews & Best In Class
If you’re going to buy a new mobility scooter, you’ll probably be searching for mobility scooter reviews. And once you’ve found some mobility scooter models you think might be best for your needs, you’ll probably want to compare the options in more detail, for example the differences in pricing, technical specifications and features.
